Winthrop Carty

Winthrop D. Carty has been the Executive Director of the Melton Foundation since 2006. He is also a co-founder and editor for case studies of the journal Innovations (MIT Press). Winthrop previously served as Associate Director of the Ash Institute of Democratic Governance and Innovation at Harvard University's Kennedy School of Government, where he led the effort to build a research and teaching network to promote government innovation worldwide under sponsorship of the Ford Foundation. During much of the 1990's he developed and implemented cultural and academic exchange programs throughout Latin America sponsored by numerous foundations, governments, and multilateral agencies on behalf of Harvard's LASPAU program. Winthrop has researched and published on the roles of innovation, technology, and higher education in international development. While at Harvard, he also designed and co-taught seminars on the strategic use of technology to academic, NGO, and government leaders throughout Latin America. He holds an EdM from Harvard University and a BA in political science from Boston University.

Patricia Ortiz has been involved in the Melton Foundation since 1996 when she was selected as a Melton Foundation Fellow. Patricia is a Physical Education teacher and graduated from Universidad de la Frontera in Temuco, Chile. After graduation she worked in a private school teaching elementary and middle school students. She coached high school track and field for four years. Patricia and her husband, Eduardo, moved to Honduras, where she worked for two years as a volunteer teacher in an orphanage with at-risk children. After a short time in Eugene, Oregon, they moved back to Chile, where Patricia began working for the Melton Foundation in various functions and currently serves as Program Manager.

Torunn Meighan
Chief Financial Officer

Torunn K. Meighan is the Chief Financial Officer of the Melton Foundation. She has worked for the Foundation since January 1996. Torunn is responsible for the Foundation’s internal and external financial reporting, budgeting, treasury, taxes, legal affairs, and governance and compliance requirements. Torunn has a B.S. in marketing and statistics from the Norwegian School of Management in Oslo, Norway and a MBA in accounting from the Norwegian School of Economics and Business Administration in Bergen, Norway. Prior to working for the Melton Foundation, she was the Corporate Controller for Molson Breweries USA in Reston, Virginia from 1990 to 1995 and was the Corporate Accounting Manager for Guinness USA in New York City from 1984 to 1995. She worked in public accounting prior thereto. Torunn lives in McLean, VA.

Markus Lang
Learning Coordinator

Markus Lang joined the Melton Foundation as Learning Coordinator in 2011. Prior to that, he served as Faculty Campus Coordinator for the Melton Foundation at Friedrich Schiller University Jena, where he also taught political science from 2005-2011. Markus is responsible for developing and implementing the Melton Foundation’s Global Citizenship Development Program. His work encompasses designing and delivering experiential learning programs that bring global citizenship to life by engaging Fellows with civil society locally and internationally through online and classroom learning, workshops, events, outreach activities, and internships. His interest in international education started to develop during a high school exchange in Iowa. He has returned several times to different parts of the United States for extended study and research. He has also volunteered for the foreign exchange programs of Youth for Understanding. At Jena University, he was responsible for content and administration of the Erasmus exchange program at the Department of Political Science. Markus holds a PhD in political science from Chemnitz University of Technology. He has published books and articles about transnational transfers of political ideas. Markus lives near Jena, Germany.

Lars Dietzel

Lars Dietzel is the interim Program Assistant of the Melton Foundation. He was selected as a Fellow of the Melton Foundation in 2002. As Senior Fellow, Lars has been active in the organization of various events. He has also served as chair of the Education Program Area of the Melton Foundation Grant Committee and was an intern in the Melton Foundation Director’s Office in Santiago de Chile in 2005. In 2011, Lars joined the Melton Foundation's Executive Office as Strategic Planning and Administrative Assistant on a part-time basis and is now part of the full-time staff. Lars studied Education Science and Linguistics at Friedrich Schiller University (Jena) and at Johannes Gutenberg University (Mainz) and graduated with a Master's Degree in Education Science and Languages in June 2010. In 2000-2001, he worked in the Wishing Well Family Centre in North Belfast as a community and child-care worker in a community with major social decline; in 2004, he spent four months in France as an intern with Culture et Expression, an organization working with migrants that focuses on integration through language. In 2010 and 2011, Lars worked in an international summer school in Salisbury (UK). He is fluent in English and Spanish in addition to his native German. He also speaks French and would love to speak Turkish one day. Lars now lives in Santiago de Chile.

Julia Maier
Assistant of the Learning Coordinator

Julia Maier is the Assistant of Learning Coordinator, Markus Lang. She was selected as a Fellow of the Melton Foundation in 2009 and has recently graduated from Friedrich Schiller University Jena with a Bachelor degree in language and culture studies. To realize the investigation of her Bachelor's thesis where she analyzed the influence of cultural factors in development cooperation, Julia spent six months in Colombia. In October 2010, she organized the forum "Kultur macht Karriere" (culture meets business) in cooperation with the ICD, Berlin (Germany). Young women from different cultural backgrounds were addressed with the aim to further their networking and skill development to succeed in today's business world. At present, Julia lives in Cordoba-Veracruz, Mexico.

Aprameya Satish

Aprameya Satish is a student of Mechanical Engineering at BMS college of Engineering, who joined the Melton Foundation as a Junior Fellow in 2010. Parallel to the pursuit of his bachelor’s degree, he also enjoys playing the piano, music production, writing, swimming, and travelling to name a few interests. He is currently working as part time Administrative Assistant in the Melton Foundation.

Xiao Luo

Xiao Luo is one of the part-time assistants of the Melton Foundation focusing on media design and info-graphics in particular. She studies Industrial Design at Zhejiang University, Hangzhou (China) and is currently the coordinator of the Social Service Project of the Melton Foundation campus group. In 2010, she was selected as a Fellow of the Melton Foundation.

Leng Ganghua (Hiweed)

Hiweed Leng (冷罡华) majored in pomology (study of fruit trees) and minored in computer science. He worked for Haier Group for six years as a Network Engineer, and later as Minister of Network Department. He has been employed as Webmaster of the Melton Foundation since 2006. As Webmaster, he maintains both back-end and front-end of the Linux server and the web sites. He is also a Linux developer. In his spare time, he developed and currently maintains a Linux distribution called "Linux Deepin", which is a famous Linux distribution in China.
